Clark County Detention Center (CCDC)
Escapes
In November of 1996, Las Vegas man Kelly Jory succeeded in his second escape
attempt by managing to pick the locks on his handcuffs and ankle-shackles in
the Clark County Detention Center. He hid in the district courtroom for two
hours before being caught by the same guard that had caught him last time. Jory's
roster of previous convictions included kidnapping, robbery, grand larceny,
grand larceny auto and a prior escape.
Suicides
In 1997 Clark County Detention Center instituted suicide prevention measures,
including new hang-proof air vents, cameras in cells for disturbed inmates,
plastic covers over cell bars, and regular mental health assessments. Despite
these precautions, there has been little decline in the number of suicides CCDC
has experienced.
2002, March: 22 year-old Anthony Bentel requested a telephone call to his family,
in which he expressed his suicidal tendencies, and later used the telephone
cords to wrap around his neck and hang himself with from the bars of his cell.
He died in hospital after been treated for two weeks.
2001, November: Rodney Brown used three pairs of prison-issue socks to hog-tie
his limbs behind his back before hanging himself from his top cell bunk with
his bedsheets. A suicide note requested Brown's wife to forgive him, while thanking
her for the best 10 years of his life.
2001, August: 22 year-old Chad Santos Salas hanged himself by using air vents
that had already been replaced because they had contributed to suicides the
previous year. The vent's holes had been reduced in size, but it still made
no difference. Officials were puzzled at how someone managed to feed any kind
of rope material through them.
2001, January: French citizen Philippe Le Menn was also considered a suicide
victim, but controversy remains, after allegations arose that guards had caused
the fatality by trying too forcefully to restrain him.
2000, October: Oscar Cisneros Sanchez, a prime suspect in a popular double-murder
in Henderson, hanged himself through the same vents that inmate Chad Salas would
later use in 2001. At that time, officials suspected that Sanchez had pushed
the bedsheets through the small holes with a plastic fork.
2000, December: Antonio "Tony" Addison hanged himself with his bedsheet
tied around his neck and strung around the bars of his cell.
