Gwinnett County Detention Center Inmate Died from Meningitis Infection

May 2 2006

20 year-old Gwinnett County Detention Center inmate Zachary Harris, who had been admitted 3 days before, was stricken dead with a meningitis bacterium, forcing 175 of the Detention Center's inmates to be administered immediate injections of antibiotic Rifampin.

In October of 2005, another inmate at the Detention Center, 43 year-old Harriet Washington, also died from contracting a disease, which was classed as myeloid leukemia. Days before her death, she had complained of symptoms but was ignored by Prison Health Services staff, resulting in the firing of at least 4 health staff employees. (The Atlanta Journal, 2 May 2006)
