Public Protest at "Easy Life" Inside Wymott Prison
Pictures taken of convicted paedophile Toby Studabaker, depicting
the former US Marine playing computer games in his cell and allegedly
"enjoying himself," have outraged public spokespersons
in Leyland. The 34 year-old, who began serving a four-and-a-half
year prison sentence in 2004 for forcing a 12-year-old girl to
perform sexual acts, reportedly has his own Playstation. Even
more "appalling" were his curtains, an armchair and
a colour-coordinated duvet, supposed amenities that some may argue
compromise the state's devotion to the principles of punishment
and proportionality. In addition are pictures showing Studabaker
"relaxing" with a book and lifting weights in the prison
gym.
In particular, MP for Chorley, Lindsay Hoyle, denounced the conduct
as "unacceptable," arguing that the criminal justice
system cannot reward society's sex offenders by housing them in
the "easy" Category C Prison in Ulnes Walton Lane, a
unit that houses sex offenders in a special wing.
An investigation has been launched by the Prison Service into
the photographs taken.
In July of 2003, Studabaker had developed a regular internet
relationship with the girl, and finally met her at Manchester
Airport, where they flew together across Europe, and during which
Studabaker drugged and assaulted her (10 July 2006 Lancashire
Evening Post).
