After spending about 30 years incarcerated in some of the worst prisons in this country my experience tells me the word rehabilitation is the wrong choice of wording as that word implies you was operating from a healthy place in life at one time and to rehabilitate means to bring you back to that place. As for myself I think the word to use should be habilitate as some people were never at a good place to begin with. I changed the way I use to think and behave by embracing my character defects and thinking. Corrections have not made or created any significant programs to bring inmates to a place were they can identify and develop there thinking and learning to accept responsibility for there choices rather then seeing themselves as victims and not accepting responsibility !

I was in marion in 1981 to1983. I was serving a 35year sentence for bank robberies and sent to marion right from court.I have been released 14 years ago and went on to be a productive citizen inspite of my past incarceration.Marion was a modern day Alcatraz used to punish prisoners and retribution as a message to others.

DONOVAN LIGHTBOURNE

"I WAS IN THE SMU UNIT AND I AM FROM DC-VIRGINIA AND I WAS OR ARE IN FEDS LEWISBURG AND I WAS FORCRD TO BE AS A QUEER TOWARDS PEOPLE WHO WERE STRAIGHT, WHICH MEANT BOTHERING PEOPLE AND CONSTANTLY PERFORMING SEX ACTS WITH ALL TYPE OF STRANGE MEN IN THE FEDERAL SMU PRISON, EVEN HARRASING OTHER INMATES WHO WANTED NO PART OF ME. I WOULD YELL ON THE CELL DOOR ALL DAY AND PLAY THE TICKET FOR MY CELLIE WHO WOULD PAY ME TO DO THE TICKET AND HE WOULD ENGAGE IN SEX ACTS WITH ME ALSO OVER THE DAY AS I LIVED WITH HIM WITHIN THE CELL. I HAD ALL TYPE OF CHARACTER NAMES SUCH AS MONEY, OJ, AND I WAS THEN FINDING MY SELF DOING AS SATAN ORDERED BUT ENDED UP LOOKING LIKE A CLOWN IN THE END. AND LAUGHED AT. "

I am so sorry to hear you have experience such torment. I'm not in a position to do much of anything, but I just wanted you to knkow someone heard your cry! I am writing a paper in school that is about how rehabilitation centers have failed to "rehabilitate", and I stumbled across your article. But I wanted you to know I'm praying for your strength, and the mental stability you'll need to endure such circumstances.

Quit whining like a bitch, it is assholes like you who started this Bullshit PREA. You cultivate the atmosphere by having relationships in prison and then cry foul when you want out of the relationship. Suck it up.........

Hey, Dec. 2014. You are one asshole. I started PREA, through the organization I started in 1980. I notice that you were afraid to put your name to your statement. I'm not afraid. My name is Russell Smith. Now come here and plant yourself on my doorstep so I can cut your head off with my little biddy machete. Punk!

"Mike from 9/10/2008 -- Sir, I was just wondering if this was true or not: Were the SORT or CERT teams, cell-extraction teams, first used at Marion following the 1983 Murder of the two BOP guards? I have heard many stories never had the opportunity to ask someone who WAS in the facility. Thank you sir, and I hope you are still doing well."

"I was in USP Marion for 11 years. From 1981 to 1992 I spent a total of 35 years in prison and was recently paroled under the old federal parole laws this past June. I am now living in Saginaw, Michigan, working at a non-profit center.
