the babysitter, first off, if they are to admit it who will listen? as we all know nobody listens to what natives have to say its just another form of the governments ideas. but also it happens in the us with the colour ppl. face it, its true and i do know that gaurds put up with alot but again its there CHOICE to take the job just like u said its there choice to not commit a crime.

they should not have game systems no, computers only for learning... you CAN NOT treat them like DOGS because when they get out they will be ANIMALS....pc. out talkin from experience from both ends of the system. michelle

"all you people talking about all the bad things happening in jails. let me tell you...The Headingly Hotel is far better than what your son/father/nephews or whomever they are tell you. First off, they get computers, books, PS2 and loads of games to choose from, they can get 5$/ week in welfare for canteen. They get free toiletries, if they want...and of course they get all their meals for free too...WHO pays for this? TAX PAYERS...on average a male inmate is something like 75k/year to house in a jail.... Why the Fa%^ would you feel sorry for these people who are in jail, and probably in a safer place than they would be if they were raping women, robbing innocent people, selling crack to kids...or let me guess they ARE ALL INNOCENT, RIGHT? The guards have to listen these puss nuts threats, and attempts at intimidation day-in and day-out and you expect them to treat everyone kindly. THIS ISN T a day camp...IT S JAIL. you don t go to jail for being a good guy. you go to jail bc you ve done something wrong. i full well realize sometimes people get mixed up with the wrong people and they can get into trouble...but if you ve been to jail multiple times that excuse no long holds any weight...YOU make BAD choices and are no longer worthy of your freedom. Inmate should have thought about his kids, wife, parents and the effect it has on them BEFORE commitiing a crime. MICHELLE: if Natives want the cycle broken the first step is admitting there is a problem. Natives are proud to be in jail, gives them status in jail and on the streets..Don t blame the Government for this one. Every single person chooses which path they go down, regardless of where they came from and what they have experienced in life. Take a look inside your own teepee before passing blame on the system for your peoples problems. JACK BENDER. I highly doubt you scared the shit out of the guards and i doubt you beat up everyone you could for looking at you...and you re a piece of shit jsut for saying that. Guards woulda smacked you around and made you cry like a little bitch. and they probably did. you wouldn t be on here bragging about how tough you were otherwise."

I was recently released from HCC after 5 long horrible months. The staff working there are complete pieces of crap who treat the inmates like less than human. The staff i realize have to deal with some tough individuals at times in tough situations but not every inmate should be painted with the same brush. I really hope i get to see some of you now that i am out we will have us a nice chat.

"Great comments Elena; my son is out now but it still irritates me that someone else s son/daughter is or can be caught in the same mess. Corruption, without doubt. Gangs run the wards and the weak who are too scared to stand up to them, do as they are told by the gangs (and let s be real, who wouldn t given the same situation) and they are the one s who get the punishment. Time for the Guards to open their eyes and do their jobs. Don t wonder why you get mouthed off at and disrespected by all the inmates, that s obvious, inmates need to make changes in their lives to make a difference, why not show by example???"

"Mad Mom

My son was just released and believe me I have no rose colored glasses on. I know my son makes really poor decisions and has broken the law and no matter how minor, it s law breaking, but truly he was the product of a beyond-harsh judge who did not make the punishment fit the crime.

So he is in there and the guards paint all the inmates with the same brush. Could they be cynical because of the crap that does go on... for sure it happens in lots of professions... nurses etc. But it doesn t make it right. Inmates pay with their own money, for the canteen, and it is supposed to be delivered between specific times. Now I could care less if they get chocolate bars on time, but lozenges for smokers so they don t get irritated, hygiene products like soap, deodarant etc (which is 3x the cost of it at say a Walmart... who s making this money?) Their excuse ... well they are on Facebook or chatting with other guards and could just care less that the wards get filled with irritated (and some violent) inmates.

Then on release, someone finishes court at 10am. Paperwork is sent by Crown etc in a reasonable time frame yet they don t bother processing him until 8:30 pm? And on top of that when he has canteen money left over they say, Oh, the till is broken and give him a few loonies when he is owed around $50.00? Seems like their are foxes watching the hen house???????"

Sad mom

"My son went back to Headingley today and reading all these stories makes me sad. He was raised in a good middle-class home with a loving family who tried to help him as much as possible. From smoking pot to being addicted to Oxy s for three years led to crime, dealing and being in Remand three times, Headingley once before and Milner Ridge. He was admitted to drug court but failed almost all of his drug tests. His doctor at a clinic on main had him high on methadone and Valium and did not ever lower his dose.

All these stories about jail are nothing to brag about, it is not a place to spend any amount of time. This country is soft on crime and when someone gets a chance to get out they should take that chance and make the decision to change even if it means moving out of the province to get away from associates. Life is too short to waste doing crime and being a drain on families and society and ending up in jail over and over. Life is a gift, you don t know how long you have...."

"Some of the correctional strategies are helping some inmates but physically hurting others. My freind was put in prison by a crooked boss and because he is high up in politics, is a pillar of the community, and has money he still walks the streets. My friend found a good paying job after the crooked boss and had to give up her job to go to prison. Now she has a felony record, and can forget paying restitution.

Upon arrival she was put in a military type boot camp for training and developed some severe medical problems because of the program. Now she is going to have to have a hysterectomy and her bladder tied up. "

"I spent a few years in Oklahoma Prison in Taft Ok., called Dr. Eddie Warrior State Pen. I fell out of Stephens County. One redneck place, avoid it if all possible, don t even drive through this place. My time - I cried for at least a year every day of the week. The hardest thing for me to get used to - so many women. All ages and all shapes and races. It was totally overwhelming for me! I was 48 when I went in. The guards were okay to a certain extent, but there were those few who were just downright wrong! The noise was mind blowing sometimes, I wanted to find a corner and hide. The food was gross, small portions. Stamped on the box in the kitchen FOR INMATE CONSUMPTION ONLY now that was the lunch meat and it didn t even look like meat at all. Medical care - so so. Guards brought in tobacco and sold it. And sexual favors went down. And the lesbian activity was really bad. Scar me for life that is for sure. Didn t need to see that crap! But basically - the prison system here needs reform. Warehousing people is not the answer to the country s prison system, but it s a money making business for the state and they get money from the Feds - what a scam. So more people in jail = more money! Just not right and needs to stop. I pray nightly that the people that are held captive stay strong mentally and find a way to cope with life in prison."
