In the late 1950s and early 1060s, I was a student at Southern Illinois University & played on the varsity baseball team. Every spring we went to Menard State Prison to play a game against the prison baseball team. The prison team had an older black guy as their pitcher. He was left-handed but wore a right-hander's glove, backwards. He always came into the game from a little shack far out in outfield, next to the prison/outfield wall. We were told he got to live in that shack alone. He was a good pitcher but never spoke & always looked hangdog. Does anyone know any stories about that guy?

did a six year bit in menard the first, I hear a lot of bullshit stories from the tough guys , but I was there in the 70 and 80s ,it was the only max place a white man had a chance because of northside, yes I was a member and proud of it, we helped a lot of young guys learn prison ways and how to protect their selves, was life rough ,yes , if you have not been ,it is a different world, so my advise from an old man now is stay clean and out of all stupid bullshit,no matter how bad it is out here , it is a lot better than being in . signed a ex-con not a inmate

"I served 121/2 years in I.D.O.C. I started in I.Y.C. St Charles in 1979 and ended at a work release center in Southern Il. I ve seen so much that the average citizen couldn t imagine. Inmate on inmate violence is expected. I ve witnessed suicides and many inmate assaults on inmates and guards. I have seen guards subdue and restrain dozens of out of control inmates. But, in 12 1/2 years, Menard is the only institution in which I witnessed guards assaulting inmates, and sometimes, for no other reason than entertainment. I ll leave you with a funny story. A former correctional officer at Menard, ( he now makes $24.00/hr working for E.T. Simonds doing road construction with your tax dollars) was dismissed from his position for giving contraband to an inmate in exchange for watching said inmate perform oral sex on himself, multiple times."

"I was a guest in menard back in 1985 I was a young kid stupid didn t know my butt from a hole in the ground. but I grew up and realized the reality of things..Time is hard, But time is even harder when your are free.. I was not taught how to live free and how things affect you out here. I was told do good do what we tell you and you will be a part of the world, But I say this, Have your counselors explain the real deal to you before your release, I did what I thought was right followed there way, But the downside to that is. The world is a very angry place for us. The truth I have heard this many of times even to this day, People say I hate felons, In some cases we all know some prisoners need to stay where there at. The point being, Do for yourself people out here in the real world don t give a shit about you. Stay positive keep your head up. I did I have my own business I have 5 kids 2 grand kids, 2 kids in college So I know it can be done..The real deal is that find out what you can do before you are free.. I went to college got a 4 year degreee in computer science come to find out after 4 years couldn t land a job because of my background so do your homework before release. peace out."

"I went to menard in 1985, back then prision in comparison to today was sweet, 420 and distilled alcohall, extotion,, we ran the prision so to speek, looking back it was rather crazy. People getting beat, stabed, extorted, you know we were rather wild. i got out in 1993, because of past recored a slap on the rist for most got me 1 year in 1998, very glad i went. what i saw was orgainization.

The gaurds now have control, to my brothers who died there rest in peice mt brothers, i was a north sider, we were very crazy men. ya happy to see people can now go to prision and get there life right, i remember guiting college when they put in a meatal detector, i was not about to give up my only protection, besides the gang i was in would not alow me to change positions and not carry a shank, i remember always two men armed with shanks taking me to visits and picking me up, i always had access to multiple shanks. No wonder i have pts lol , by the wat i now own 2 acers in the ozarks, 5 bed home the depot sallon, wife son 3 daughter 6 no one belives i was once llama Bill n/s funny i stoped drinking in 1998, aint been back sence, been volenter fire fighter buisness owner for over 20 years retired at 48, some of us just start making good choices, there not bad men not most, just dumb choices after another lead them the wrong way, prayers with them, however, i have seen very bad men there, you dont realy want to know most in tamms our death row now , prisions in illinois are 100 times emproved and im so happy to know this."

"My fiance was just sentenced to three years in prison. Eight weeks before our first child is due. He was torn apart that he got so close to seeing his son and boom, he loses his only chance and will miss out on much time and so many moments. But every night I pray for strength to get through this and YES IT DOES HELP. Just write and visit as much as possible and it wont hurt so bad. And be greatful he s not dead and you still have eachother. You do the crime you do the time. "

"I m new to this also. My fiance just got found guilty of a crime he did not commit. He was offered 15 years but would not admit to something he did not do and in return got sentenced to 45 years. I most definately believe in you do the crime you do the time but what happens when a person is innocent?

The court system is far from fair and targeted at black and latino men...if you are a black man you should not be subjected to an all white jury. I am not at all racist in any way but do you see white men getting stuck with an all black jury? Never saw or heard of that happening. No gun, no fingerprints, no robbery, no identification, no personal relationship to the victim; hell, they did not even know each other.

The day the verdict was read there were no dry eyes in the court room, but to his public defender, there was tears. She came back and told me the state knew he didn t do it and that they were just looking for a conviction. I struggle everyday with 3 kids whose only question is when is daddy coming home. I pray everyday for his saftey and this appeal. I love you kt and your family knows you re innocent. "

"I was in Menard 5yrs of a 12 year bit,(1986 to 1991). I lost 6 years good time and got stabbed once. I went down for armed robbery life in there was hard and it made me a harder man. I have been out almost 12 years now and have to lie to find work, I can t hold a relationship with a woman and my life is worse than it was before I went in.

I have a class A CDL and my past keeps getting me fired or not considered. When does it end? NEVER."
