"My daugther is in the River Side Unit. She called me last night to inform me that she was in trouble and got a major case..When I ask her what happened she stated that a guard grabbed her by the arm and spun her around because the bottom of her pants were not covering the tongue of her shoes. My daugther ask officer Keaton the name of the officer that touched her because she wanted to file a grivence against her...Guards are not suppose to touch a inmate like that and if it was a inmate they would be charged with assault.Officer Keaton would not give my daugther the officers name. Also this was the last day of school for her and officer Keaton wrote her up for refusing to go to school. Officer Keaton is the one who called and had my daugther picked up and she now has caugther a major case..why because Officer Keaton said so. I notified the Ombudsman but, they are no help to the inmates...they always favor the guards..The inmates are dogs, scum of the earth and in prison they have no rights"

"I spent some time at Woodman in Gatesville, then was finally paroled from Crain/Riverside Unit. It was surely the darkest time in my life. I am blown away at how little opportunity there is for an inmate to get any education or seek any kind of knowledge. There were a handful of officers that were decent, most of them were not. I met some beautiful (and not so beautiful) people on my journey, but one thing I can tell you is that something has to change with our justice system and our prison system.
Do we really want people just rotting away in an environment that breeds negativity, ignorance, ill will and bitterness? Punishment is one thing but the Texas prison system is archaic and barbaric, anyone familiar with the hoe squad? I could share a lot of bad things that I saw and experienced but I want to also share something good. I not only left prison with a handful of people that I consider family (and it is hard to find anyone worthy of trusting in prison) but I also brought a prison kitten home with me. He was sick and on the verge of death but he is happy and healthy now. His name is Chance and he brings amazing joy to my life.
If anyone has the ability to adopt one of these cats, just contact any warden on any unit and request to adopt a cat or kitten. Some officers are good to the cats, I have personally seen some of them purchase cat food out of their own pockets, and I have also seen officers throw bleach water at the cats and try to smash them with brooms. It is a rough life. The women on the units love the cats and share a bond with them but most would be so happy to know that these cats have good homes. I was told that the warden wants to round up all the cats and have them put down, we know how rumors are and I can t verify that this is true or just a rumor, but I can tell you that these cats have a high mortality rate but can give so much love if you open your home to one...or two.... Thanks"
"I spent 3 1/2 years on the Gatesville Unit which was actually renamed The Christina Melton Crain Unit in 2009. I spent 2 years at Terrace & 1 1/2 years at Sycamore which are 2 of 7 satellites of the prison. It is a very dark place where most of the guards families have worked for many generations so all of the meaness & contempt that they have for the prisoners has been instilled in them as they were growing up. It s in there blood as their parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, siblings hell all of them out there in Gatesville work for or have at onr time worked for the Prison or the boys home that it used to be.
I ve seen women die in there because of neglect from guards to call for medical help during extreme emergencies that did result in death. There are a handful of guards that do treat you with respect if you give them respect but most of them have no business whatsoever be in charge of offenders but should in fact be in the system themselves. It was a very dark time out there during my incarceration in Gatesville & so glad I ve done my time & came home already."
