My sweetheart just arrived and she has been a victim in too many ways to count. Let's just say if you have to defend yourself with lethal force to a rapist, you better have a witness! Does anyone know what kind of time is realistic for calls and visitation? I read CONCERNED's letter and hope I'm not in the same boat. She has nearly a life sentence. Does that qualify her for any special considerations?

ASSISTANT WARDEN AT LOWELL HAS BEEN FIRED

An assistant warden at Lowell Correctional Institution has been fired after an investigation determined that he acted inappropriately around female inmates.

The Florida Department of Corrections Office of the Inspector General’s report found allegations against Assistant Warden Martin “Marty” Martinez as creditable and sustained a charge of conduct unbecoming.

As a result, Martinez was dismissed on Jan. 15.

State officials said Martinez was hired by DOC on Sept. 14, 1984, and appointed assistant warden at Lawtey Correctional Institution on Oct. 17, 2008. He became assistant warden at Lowell, which is located in northern Marion County, on Dec. 2, 2011.

Martinez could not be reached for comment.

The 53-page report states that in July 2014, Sgt. John Meekins contacted the Inspector General’s Office to complain that he was called into a conference room and while there was repeatedly threatened by Martinez. The threats, as reported by the sergeant, was reportedly witnessed by two supervisors, one a captain, the other a lieutenant.

The complaint was investigated; however, it did not meet the requirements to receive whistleblower status, officials said.

But during the investigation, Lowell staff members reported allegations that Martinez appeared to be too chummy with female inmates, which they said gave the appearance of unprofessional conduct.

My family and I have submitted applications for visitation for an inmate, my daughter. I have called and spoke to the classification officer Ms Alcoon which is now McLaughlin to no avail. I have spoken to the supervisor Ms Mcquire, she has the applications told me to call back at a certain time, which I did and she didn't answer the phone. Ms. Mcquire said, "it a privilege to visit not a law. They were understaffed as well". Please help me, I don't know what to do

Call the warden, Gus Mazorra directly. I had personal interaction with him at another facility, as an inmate, and he is a good and fair man.Try calling at about 10 before 8, as he gets there early and will answer his own phone. Good luck and God Bless

I really hope this is a way to change the situation, but I guess it rubs off on the guards being inside the environment and like a mistreated dog they start rebeling, growling back.. and as any bully does, take it out on the least deserving. I am completely shocked, saddenened, and now is the time while the federal heat is on and investigating this, make it known, write your story, print it out and send it to every official, and govenor, attorney general in the states. Then, send it out to parents and let them know they are the same as Trayvon Marten, and the latest in Missuri no matter what or who the color of a person either the inmate or guard, this is abuse and you need to keep the story going on. Contact 60 minutes, or write to Oprah.. you never know go to there websites Dr Phil, Jerry Springer anyone ask what you can do.

Michelle Tierney, 48, died Thursday after she was transported from the Lowell Correctional Institution to Ocala Regional Medical Center the day before, her family told the Herald.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement confirmed Saturday that it is investigating Tierney’s death, as it is Ellington’s. Tierney’s family, as well as sources at the prison, said that Tierney had been seriously ill for some time, and that doctors at the hospital told her family that at the time she arrived at the hospital her feet were blue, she was in septic shock, she had a fever and was suffering from pneumonia.

She died early Thursday morning. After serving 14 years, Tierney had been scheduled to go home around the start of the new year.
