Please note that only the gangs with the highest "popularity" ratings, and those with actual and expected presence inside North American prisons are collected. There are, in reality, well over 30,000 types of street gangs of various sizes in the United States, alone, and approximately 230,000 prison gang members incarcerated in state and federal prisons.*According to the FBI, a "Prison Gang" is a self-perpetuating criminal organization that has arisen and operated within the prison system (National Gang Intelligence Center, 2011).
